[ Story ]
“SPEC” series director Tsutsumi Yukihiko delivers the film adaptation of Inui Kurumi’s bestselling novel, which made waves with the surprise ending. Set in the late 1980s, the Tokyo and Shizuoka parts of the story depict a love triangle between two women and a romantically challenged college student.
Dental assistant Mayu and college student Suzuki meet in Shizuoka. Their relationship develops gradually but awkwardly, but then Suzuki gets a job in Tokyo and falls for his sophisticated colleague Miyako.

1987. Side A (so says a written overlay, as if it were an audio tape, we are in 1987). City of Shizuoka, about 200 kilometers from Tokyo. Yuki Suzuki, a brilliant student of mathematics but disaster in life, fat and clumsy participating in a go-with (meetings organized between 4-5 males and as many females to find a partner). Among the participants there is a sweet and beautiful Mayuko (Atsuko Maeda), which, contrary to all expectations, sympathizes with him. The two see each other again and Yuki opens up a world. For love of her new look and takes the license: turns. She starts to call him by the nickname Takkun (virgin male). This one’s frantic efforts will be rewarded with the crown of his dream when he finds the courage to declare to Mayuko, she will reciprocate. Christmas Eve spend an evening of happiness in a hotel and he decides, always love her, to lose weight.
B side Takkun, thin and handsome, is transferred to work in Tokyo. Every weekend back in Shizuoka to be with Mayuko, though with increasing fatigue. In Tokyo knows Miyako (Kimura Fumino), a handsome fellow with whom you plan well. Miyako argues in Takkun but he, despite being attracted to her, accepts the proposal for a sense of responsibility towards Mayuko. Meanwhile Mayuko discovers she is pregnant and Takkun faces with her abortion dilemmas. The experience, however, marks them and the presence of Miyako becomes more pressing …
Adapted from a successful novel of Inui Kurumi, the film is more than the usual more or less dramatic comedy youth. Well shot, with well-chosen music, a direction of the actors treated, Initiation love can make it in a credible efforts, the struggles and failures that remote loves almost always meet. The trips Takkun ago from Tokyo to Shizuoka on his beat-maker gradually convey a sense of reunification rather than separation. In short, thematically there is nothing new but the director and the actors are able to give an emotional charge to what they show us.
Be careful, though. There is a trick that can not be revealed so as not to spoil the view, as even requires a written early in the film. One trick that with a swirl of six-minute images takes us by the hand and makes us take a series of visual somersaults that change what we have seen and thought to the last.
Yukihiko Tsutsumi, a veteran of the box office but not without sensitivity – his were the romantic 2LDK, The Bandage Club, the musical film Beck and the dramatic Memories of Tomorrow, in addition to the blockbuster more bets like Trick, 20th Century Boys or SPEC – is good at running the show, no spikes but also without falling. This is supported in particular by the performance of Atsuko Maeda, former member of the famous band AKB48 that since he left the band to devote himself to the movies seem to find film in its own movie actress personality far from negligible.
