Tetsuo is a loser. He pretends to be the indie director on the wave of a little success a few years ago but he does not find the way to emerge. He motivated his defeats by saying that he did not want to ruin his artistic integrity but in fact he could not combine anything and jump between sexual adventures and little gimmicks, including that of paying the “acting lessons” by the supposed beginner actors of his next film . Despite being over thirty years old, she still lives behind her mother and sister and enjoys fake pairs with any actress who has been shot or even masturbating in front of a video. His companion is the faithful friend and help-director Mamoru, secretly in love with him, who pays money for the next movie by shooting porn video that resells to malevitous bullies. This “next movie” is a kind of continuous bass if not the leading theme of the whole story. In fact, Tetsuo lives alive for the realization of the next movie, which, more than a concrete goal, takes on the taste of living conditions.
One day, however, two new students arrive at the acting school: Minami, a young introvert girl and Ken, an aspiring writer. Tetsuo sees in Minami the great actress she still does not know about. He also sees that Ken’s screenplay is the ideal vehicle to finally make the big movie, with Minami being the protagonist, of course, who waits for a lifetime and throws himself headlong in the company with the help of Mida’s mummy, an unlikely How nice a producer. But Minami’s abilities, including the revenge of an actor discarded by Tetsuo, are noticed by a well-known director, Kano, who takes her with him as a lover and actress star of his films …
The director Uchida Eiji, after a series of unexplained little films, from the banal Black Angels (2011) to the unresolved Greatful Dead (2014), was put under and in the best indie tradition he wrote subject and script, then He directed and mounted everything. The result is great: a slit of the “slums” of the movie world through the portrait of a loser that summons a lot of other film footsteps, from Lebowsky to the characters of Yamashita’s early works. Tetsuo, in his wanderings in the company of the entertainment company, shows us the less glamorous facets of this world, where money, sex, feelings are commodities exchanging in function of the objective. And the goal is only one: for actors to take part in an important movie, for filmmakers to make an important movie, for producers to make a movie that makes it. Memorable is the scene where an actress takes home a director but before he gets to him, he is reading a friend’s phone on the wikipedia page of the director and when he discovers that for a while he does not conclude anything , In short, that she can not benefit, liquidates it in four and four o’clock.
Well-behaved, the ultimate purpose of moving the various characters, beyond the money and the success, is the fact that they can continue to be present on the scenes and thus become part of that world. At one point, a character says “Making movies is like falling in love with a bitch but you can not do it”. The final part, when Tetsuo abandons the last shreds of love and begs anyone (the well-known director as well as Minami now famous), makes it never to be the intense and morbid flavor of belonging to that world. But, as if to confirm that the world of cinema is a bad environment, the yakuza maneuver is always lurking (I stop here not to reveal too much).
The actors’ performances are noteworthy, beginning with Shibukawa Kiyohiko, a face that seems to have been born for the part and which has also recently been popular with films such as Soshite dorobune wa yuku (And the Mud Ship Sails Away, 2013) and Obon no otto Obon Brothers, 2015). Not least are the two compulsive actresses: Uchida Chika (Guilty of Romance, Penance, Disregarded People) and the very young Okano Maya (It’s me, it’s me). As always high-level Denden performance, in the part of the producer broken to any experience and with ties to the yakuza that somehow supports Tetsuo’s ambitions.
